Wordle Results

I stopped updating this (and playing Wordle) after the new york times purchased it from the original author and started adding extra code to track and monetize it.

I found Wordle in early January 2022. I enjoy word puzzles, and since it looked like it was becoming "a thing" on the net, I decided to start keeping a record of my progress, and share it with anybody else who may be interested. Obviously, this site is that record.

In addition to this, I'm also using a virtual machine with no internet connection and a copy of the Wordle web site (it's only two files), so I can manually change the clock and play previous days' puzzles from the beginning (which was 2021-06-20).

Background

I started off by writing down my guesses and the resulting "patterns" for each day, in a Markdown file. (I'm a big fan of Markdown.)

I then created a simple web page where I posted my results, so my friends (some of whom also play Wordle) could see my results without my having to send them out to half a dozen people each day. I didn't want the web page to contain the answers, at least not when you first load it, so I figured out just enough Javascript to make the answers hidden at first, but allow them to be viewed if somebody wanted to see them.

Then it occurred to me that, over time, the web page itself was just going to keep growing. So I decided to split it up into separate pages for each month.

I also wanted to make some minor formatting tweaks. After having to make the same minor edits a few dozen times, it occurred to me that if I want to tweak the output again, I would have to do the same boring repetitive steps again, but across multiple web pages. A big part of what I do for a living is figuring out how to automate repetitive processes, so of course I came up with a way to automate building and editing these pages.

I wrote a Perl script which reads the original Markdown file where I still record my results every day, generates the HTML files which make up the site, and includes the answers and/or patterns on days where the Markdown file has data.
